Troy Redfern – Retribution (Limited Edition CD Release)
While Retribution can be seen and heard as a follow-on to resonator rocker and six-string slide slinger Troy Redfern’s previous album Invocation, the rawer sounding reality is it’s a studio recorded representation of Redfern’s recent live forays as a blues-rock power duo, in the percussive company of either Nicky Waters or Paul Annis.
Indeed, while Invocation and prior offerings Wings Of Salvation and …The Fire Cosmic! established the ‘resonating’ sound Troy Redfern has become known for, their fuller-bodied production made them studio albums in every way.
Retribution, by contrast, features songs written specifically for those power duo tours, along with brand new, duo format material. The nine-track result is a limited edition collector’s item for Troy Redfern fans and those taken by the visceral impact of the power duo shows.
Opening brace 'Shakin’' and 'Takin’ My Soul' (the one-two punch that opened the duo shows earlier this year) encompass what Troy Redfern in live, power duo mode, is all about.
The former, which kicks off with an insistent chugging guitar and tribal beat rhythm, slides (in the six-string sense) into a grooving up-tempo with Redfern adding a suitable snarl to his raspy vocal.
The mid-tempo latter, built on part groove, part gritty riff, is an equally purposeful offering that sits somewhere between dirty blues and tribal metal.
Contrast is then provided via the short, Spaghetti Western styled instrumental 'Road To Retribution Part 1.' While you would expect the longer 'Part 2' (with fitting 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' whistle interjections) to follow-on, placing it further down the track order helps spread the sonic textures of Retribution, especially as 'Part 1' works well as an atmospheric segue into six-and-a-half minute number, 'Wings.'
Switching from a brooding opening to a more purposeful rhythmic cadence, 'Wings' then morphs into a middle eastern meets blues slide instrumental section, before returning to the earlier riff and rhythm part.
The results are one of Troy Redfern’s more experimental pieces.
The raucous 'Aching Heart' and swampy, dark vibe of 'Sacrifice' are akin to the sort of songs you would expect to hear on recent Troy Redfern releases but here, stripped back to a raspier voice, guitar and drums, they become the very definition of Retribution’s raw and rugged approach.
Triolian slide piece 'Blood Moon' acts as a folksy-blues instrumental interlude before 'The Ocean' boogies the album to a rawk and roll conclusion.
Retribution, an album that emulates the Troy Redfern live experience while allowing the musician to dance to his own, rawer and raucous tune. More power (duo) to him.
